What is Wi-Fi Calling and how does it work?

With Wi-Fi Calling, also known as Voice Over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), you can make and receive calls, MMS, and SMS from your compatible device over an accessible Wi-Fi network. You just need a current phone plan or prepaid service with us that is operating on the latest software, be connected to a Wi-Fi network and have the felix Wi-Fi Calling feature turned on.

Wi-Fi Calling can help if you live in an area that can’t connect to the felix mobile network or have areas around your home where you can’t make or receive a call.

For complete list of compatible devices refer to https://felixmobile.com.au/terms-policies/device-list

Wi-Fi Calling works by connecting to a Wi-Fi network and transmitting the same data which travels through our mobile network. To access Wi-Fi Calling, you must have a compatible device and enable Wi-Fi Calling in your device settings. Once Wi-Fi Calling is active, your device will switch over to Wi-Fi calling if you move to a poor coverage area and your device connects to an available Wi-Fi signal.

Calls, SMS and MMS made via Wi-Fi Calling are all charged at the same usage rates per your plan. Data usage will not be impacted. If you’re using an Internet connection, the internet data will be consumed and will be charged (or data allowance consumed) based on your agreement with your Internet service provider.

Where can I make Wi-Fi calls from?

If you have an accessible Wi-Fi network connection and there is limited or no home mobile coverage available, your handset will automatically use Wi-Fi Calling to make or receive calls. It will choose the best connection type (4G, 5G, Wi-Fi) available and automatically route calls through that connection.

How can I make or receive calls on my phone using Wi-Fi Calling?

  • When making a call over Wi-Fi to another mobile phone everything is as normal.

  • If you’re in a network coverage area and wish to use Wi-Fi calling, you will need to turn on airplane mode and have an accessible Wi-Fi network connection.

  • When calling a landline the state based area code, e.g. 02 or 03, must be used for the number to connect successfully (even when calling within the same state).

  • Furthermore, some special numbers which connect based on location services, i.e. 000, 1300 or 1800 numbers, may not connect to the correct location. To call these numbers you may need to switch off Wi-Fi Calling in your device settings, connect back to the mobile network and dial the number again. There are no additional monthly fees to use Wi-Fi Calling.

  • If you’re entering or leaving Wi-Fi coverage the call will seamlessly transition between the Wi-Fi and 4G. If you’re entering or leaving Wi-Fi coverage into 3G coverage, then the call will be disconnected.

Can I use Wi-Fi Calling to make Emergency calls?

Yes, you can use Wi-Fi Calling to make emergency calls if there’s no mobile network coverage. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Mobile Network First: Your phone will try to use the felix mobile network first. If that doesn’t work, it will look for other mobile networks.

  • Wi-Fi Calling as Backup: If no mobile networks are available, your phone will use Wi-Fi Calling, if you have a compatible device with the latest software and are connected to a Wi-Fi network.

  • Check Compatibility: Make sure your device supports emergency calls over Wi-Fi and you have Wi-Fi Calling turned on in your settings. felix updates the list of compatible devices from time to time.

  • Download Emergency+ App: This free app helps provide your location to emergency services using GPS.

  • Provide Your Location: When using Wi-Fi Calling, your location might not be automatically shared, so be ready to tell emergency services where you are.

  • Limitations: Wi-Fi Calling can’t receive National Emergency Warning System (NEWS) SMS warnings.

While you can make calls to emergency services (000 or 112) using Wi-Fi Calling if there is no mobile coverage available, we recommend using the mobile network if possible. This will provide a more accurate location to emergency services

What is VoLTE and how does it work?

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is a feature that allows you to call using our 4G network. It allows you to remain connected to the 4G network during calls, which means you can continue using 4G mobile data while making and receiving calls. To use Voice over LTE you need a device that’s compatible and enabled, and be on an eligible plan.

How do I enable Voice over LTE on my device?

Android devices

If you have a Samsung device, Voice over LTE should automatically be enabled. If you’ve previously disabled VoLTE and want to re-enable it, or would like to check if it’s enabled on your Android device, please go to your Settings > Mobile Networks

Apple devices

If you have an Apple device iPhone 6 or later, Voice over LTE should be automatically enabled. To manually enable, please go to the settings in your iPhone – Settings > Mobile > Mobile Data options > Voice and Data
